In the last article in this series we discussed that there are a variety of very different uniform types that modern EMTs use as their everyday uniform. From a more professional Class A look to more dressed down polo and t-shirt looks, there is definitely diversity when it comes to EMS Uniforms. As we have researched a bit in the field, we have also found that some EMS professionals are not very happy with this lack of standardization in their uniform. On certain ems forums, discussion boards, and blogs, there is quite a lot of discussion about why they like and don’t like certain kinds of uniforms and some discussion on what kind of uniform might be a good standard for ems professionals. We will help to explore some of these ideas here in this second part of the series. Continue reading Is there a standard EMT Uniform? – Part II

Fluid Resistance
This technology creates a barrier to fluids on the outside of the garment so that fluids bead up and roll off the fabric, keeping you dry and comfortable while the fabric maintains its natural breathability.
Moisture Wicking
In the heat of duty, keeping sweat away from your body is key. Moisture wicking technology captures and pulls fluids and perspiration away from the body and spreads it over the fabric surface area for quick evaporation so you will feel comfortable and dry.
Stain / Soil Resistance
Often using the Teflon finish fabric protector, this technology provides superior soil and stain resistance for fabrics to keep your uniform from looking dirty and unprofessional.
Anti-microbial technology
Applied to the fiber level to reduce bacteria that causes odor over time, this technology also reduces the frequency of washing needed for your apparel so that other features are not worn down as quickly. Continue reading Top 12 features to look for in law enforcement uniform shirts

Concealable Body Armor : The Fiber Revolution – Part II
Some experts claim that the advances in lightweight, concealable body armor has not kept up sufficiently with modern weapon technology. In fact, as weapons become more advanced, especially the increased power and automatic technology in modern firearms, it has become difficult to develop products capable of protecting against them. Law Enforcement officers, in particular, are of particular consideration, especially in high crime and violent areas. The key to developing adequate Body Armor lies in the development of “super fibers.” These advances in fiber are the key to developing new and effective technology. Fabric hybrids are currently being designed by many independent companies to perform exponentially better than any lightweight, concealable body armor before. Assessing Concealable Body Armor
Concealable Body Armor is an effective defensive tool. Effective, only if the armor is properly maintained and assessed. There are a number of factors that can influence the service life of body armor. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has done research (detailed in the publication entitled Old Armor Tests As Good As New and available from NLECTC) indicating that the age of the armor is not the only safety factor. Other details to consider include: how regularly the armor was worn; how it was cared for; whether the armor fit the wearer properly (most people lose or gain weight over a period of years); and the overall condition of the armor (do the fasteners still work properly, and so on). We encourage departments that issue body armor to have a routine inspection program for body armor, just as they would for weapons, vehicles, and other types of issued equipment.
